Project Research: Field Research & Visual Gathering

Class trip to Belum Forest, 23rd-25th July 2010.

Most of the houses here are made of boards of wood and zinc rooftops.

A hut built next to their vegetable farm.

Most of the settlements now have solar power, water tanks and even cable television.

I asked a few questions regarding the birth, marriage and death in their community, most of them are not very open (or maybe uncomfortable) to talk about it in detail. All that was said was that since most of them have converted to Muslims (The government told them that by converting, they will get some benefits from the Bumiputra status), they practice a few of the Muslims ways as well, though not all. For the births, they normally go to the nearest hospital(in this case, the one in Gerik town), no particular celebrations were made to celebrate the arrival of the newborns. Marriages was pretty easy as well, if they like each other, they just have to meet each other's parents and ask for consent, and if all goes well, they start living together and build a new family. One can marry a fellow from a different tribe, and decide which settlement they would like to stay in. As for deaths, the dead are buried away from the village, and sometimes the family of the dead organizes tahlil.
